Police in the Volta Region have opened an investigation after a mobile money vendor was found dead at Torkoni/Blave in the Hohoe Municipality.

The incident occurred on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and has left residents of the area in shock. The deceased, whose name has not been officially released, operated a mobile money business at the Hohoe main lorry station and also sold household items including toothpaste, sponges, and brushes.

According to information gathered from local sources, the deceased was heard making several phone calls earlier in the day. Those conversations, sources said, suggested that someone was demanding repayment of money. The deceased was reportedly heard explaining that he would settle the amount through mobile money or electronic cash.

Sources further indicated that later in the day, some individuals visited the deceased’s house, knocked on the door, and threatened to report him to the police over the alleged debt. These claims have not yet been independently verified by authorities.

A relative of the deceased told investigators that his brother appeared unsettled after receiving the phone calls but did not explain what was wrong. The relative reportedly left the house for town and returned later to find the door locked.

After repeated attempts to reach the deceased by phone failed, the door was forced open. The man was found unresponsive inside the room.

Officers from the Ghana Police Service were notified, and the body was conveyed to a morgue for preservation and autopsy. Police say the examination will help determine the exact cause of death.

As of the time of reporting, police have not confirmed the cause of death or whether any criminal liability is being considered. Investigators say statements are being taken from family members and other relevant persons to establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident.

Authorities have cautioned the public against speculation and say conclusions will only be drawn after investigations are completed.
