A 55-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a violent domestic incident at Sefwi Abrokofe in the Western North Region that left a woman critically injured.
The suspect has been identified as William Gyamfi, also known as Kofi Manso. Police say he is alleged to have attacked a family member, Akua Agyeiwaa, believed to be in her early 50s, during a misunderstanding at their residence.
According to information available to the Ghana Police Service, the suspect allegedly used a pair of scissors to stab the victim in both eyes. The circumstances leading to the altercation remain under investigation.
The injured woman was rushed to the Juaboso Government Hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment. Police have not provided further details on her current condition.
Reports from the community indicate that before a police patrol team arrived to effect the arrest, the suspect was assaulted by some residents who had gathered at the scene. When police took custody of him, he was found to have visible injuries, including swelling around his left eye and forehead, as well as bleeding from his left leg.
The suspect was also taken to the Juaboso Government Hospital for medical attention and was later discharged. He has since been placed in police custody and is assisting with investigations.
Some residents have alleged that the suspect has a history of violent behaviour, including a previous cutlass attack on a brother-in-law. Police, however, have not confirmed these claims and say they form part of the ongoing investigations.
The incident occurred at Sefwi Abrokofe. Police say they are continuing inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and will take appropriate action based on the outcome of investigations.
Authorities have cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that all suspects must be allowed due process under the law.
The suspect remains in custody, and no charges have been formally announced as of the time of reporting.
