The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced the immediate suspension of all public gatherings and student programmes on campus. This decision follows a violent confrontation between student groups in the early hours of Sunday, February 8, 2026, which resulted in one injury.
According to a press release issued by the university on February 10, the injured student is currently receiving treatment at the University Hospital and is responding positively. University authorities described the incident as a matter of “grave concern” and stated that immediate measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of lives and protection of property on campus.
KNUST has initiated investigations to identify all individuals involved in the disturbance. Management has affirmed that appropriate sanctions will be applied in strict accordance with the university’s statutes and disciplinary procedures.
The directive to suspend all public gatherings and student programmes is effective until further notice. The university clarified that only activities with official approval for religious, medical, or humanitarian purposes will be permitted during this suspension period.
In a bid to maintain peace and order, KNUST is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies. This collaboration aims to ensure that any students or non-students found to have disturbed the peace are arrested and, where necessary, prosecuted.
The university also reiterated its existing policy to publish the names and photographs of students who are dismissed, rusticated, or suspended for disciplinary reasons on official university platforms, serving as a deterrent.
The statement, signed by Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the University Relations Officer, on behalf of the Registrar, assured all stakeholders of management’s unwavering commitment to maintaining safety, security, and order on campus. Further updates are expected as investigations into the incident progress.
