A Ghanaian national living and working in the United States has been killed in a stabbing incident in New York, police have confirmed.
The victim, George Ennin, was 53 years old and worked as a security guard in the city. According to U.S. law enforcement authorities, he was attacked on Monday while on his way to work in the Bronx.
Police say the stabbing appeared to be unprovoked and that there was no prior relationship between the victim and his attacker. Investigators have described the incident as a random act of violence, though inquiries into the circumstances are still ongoing.
Neighbours and local residents have described Mr Ennin as a devoted father and a hardworking man who was focused on providing for his children. Friends and members of the community say he had lived in New York for several years and maintained close ties with family both in the United States and Ghana.
On Tuesday afternoon, police arrested a suspect identified as Sean Jones. According to official police records, Jones has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the killing.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the attack. Court records indicate that the suspect is expected to be arraigned, after which further details about the case may emerge.
The New York Police Department has not indicated whether mental health assessments or additional charges are being considered. Investigators say the case remains active.
Mr Ennin’s death has sparked grief within the Ghanaian community in New York, where calls have been made for justice and greater public safety measures. As with all criminal cases, the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Arrangements for the victim’s funeral and possible repatriation of his body to Ghana have not yet been publicly announced.
