The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed two serious incidents involving students that occurred in connection with a major inter-school sports competition in the Eastern Region earlier this month.

In an official statement issued on February 11, 2026, the Service reported that a male student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed during the Super Zonal Sports Event. Separately, an alleged gang rape of a female student from Osino Senior High School has also been reported to the police.

According to GES, the stabbing incident occurred when the student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School was approximately 200 metres away from the competition venue, having stepped out with a friend to purchase food. The student was allegedly attacked by other students from New Juaben Senior High Technical School.

The injured student was promptly rushed for medical attention. While GES did not provide specific details on the extent of his injuries, they confirmed that police have arrested one suspect in connection with the stabbing.

In a separate development, GES confirmed an alleged gang rape involving a female student of Osino Senior High School. Education authorities stated that two students are currently in police custody over the allegation. A third suspect, described as the alleged ringleader and a former student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is currently at large.

GES indicated that the female student received medical treatment and has since been discharged from the hospital. She is also receiving counselling and psychosocial support, coordinated by the Eastern Regional Education Directorate and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

The Service strongly condemned both incidents, describing them as unacceptable and contrary to the values and objectives of school sports competitions. “These acts are reprehensible and inconsistent with the purpose of inter-school sporting activities, which are meant to promote discipline, teamwork and unity,” the statement read.

GES further stated that it is cooperating with the Ghana Police Service and other relevant agencies to support investigations and ensure that those found responsible are dealt with according to the law.

The Service added that disciplinary actions may also be taken against students and schools involved, in line with the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct, once investigations are concluded.
