At least 23 people have lost their lives after falling into abandoned illegal mining pits across the Ashanti Region. Eleven children were among those who died.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, confirmed the tragic numbers. He stated that 19 bodies have been recovered so far.

Four other individuals remain trapped inside the dangerous pits. The minister made these disclosures during a recent briefing.

These abandoned pits are a dangerous legacy of illegal mining activities. They pose a significant threat to communities, especially children who may not be aware of the hidden dangers.

The government has been working to address the issue of illegal mining, also known as galamsey. Efforts are underway to reclaim lands and make such sites safer.

The exact locations and number of such abandoned pits in the region are still being assessed. Authorities are urging the public to report any discovered unsafe pits.

The recovery efforts are ongoing. The minister expressed deep sorrow for the loss of life and pledged support for the affected families.

This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement against illegal mining and better management of mining sites after operations cease.
