The Winneba District Court presided over by His Worship Benumah Efua Kyere ordered the remand of thirty four year old driver Isaac Gyamfi. According to a Ghana News Agency report the suspect faces charges including dangerous driving and negligently causing harm. The proceedings follow a fatal road traffic accident on the Accra Cape Coast highway involving a Toyota Hiace and a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus.
Police investigators told the court that the suspect was operating a Toyota Hiace with registration number CR 218 24 traveling towards Cape Coast. According to a Ghana Police Service statement the driver allegedly attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver which resulted in a head on collision with an oncoming Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus registration number NR 144 24. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and trapped several occupants inside the wreckage.
The Ghana National Fire Service and bystanders assisted in the rescue operation near the Gomoa Buduatta junction. A report from Citi Newsroom indicates that three passengers were confirmed dead at the scene while several others sustained varying degrees of injury. The deceased individuals were transported to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
The prosecution requested more time to conclude investigations and secure statements from the surviving victims currently receiving medical treatment. The judge adjourned the case to a later date to allow the Central Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department to complete its technical assessment of the crash site. The suspect remains in police custody pending his next court appearance as reported by the Daily Graphic.
