The Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate of the Ghana Police Service has recorded a fifteen percent increase in traffic related arrests within the Accra Metropolitan area over the past week. A Ghana News Agency report states that the surge in enforcement actions followed a series of targeted evening patrols aimed at reducing road accidents in the capital.
Official figures provided by the directorate indicate that a significant number of the arrests involved motorists performing illegal U turns on major highways. According to the Ghana News Agency the enforcement teams also focused on identifying drivers operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol during high traffic periods in the evening.
Police officials state that the special operations are part of a broader strategy to improve road safety and compliance with the Road Traffic Regulations. While specific numbers for each precinct have not been released a statement from the directorate as reported by the Ghana News Agency confirms that the operations took place across several busy corridors in Accra.
All suspects apprehended during these patrols are expected to face various charges in court including reckless driving and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The Ghana Police Service maintained that these operations will continue indefinitely to serve as a deterrent to motorists who disregard traffic laws according to the official report.
