Officers from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate of the Ghana Police Service conducted a coordinated enforcement operation across key intersections in Accra. According to a report by 3News, the exercise resulted in the seizure of more than fifty motorbikes. The operation aimed to address rising concerns regarding road safety and the blatant disregard for traffic regulations by motorcycle riders in the metropolitan area.

The enforcement team focused on specific infractions including the use of unregistered motorcycles and the failure of riders to obey red light signals. Citi Newsroom reports that some riders attempted to evade the police during the swoop which led to minor disruptions in traffic flow. The Ghana Police Service maintained that the exercise is part of a broader strategy to reduce road accidents and ensure that all road users comply with the Road Traffic Regulations 2012 Legislative Instrument 2180.

Graphic Online further corroborates that the impounded motorcycles were transported to several police stations within the Accra region for further vetting and documentation. Authorities have indicated that the owners and riders of the seized vehicles will face various charges in court once investigations into their documentation and conduct are completed. The specific locations of the sweep included busy corridors such as the Airport City stretch and the Liberation Road.

Police representatives told local media that this operation serves as a warning to those who continue to violate traffic laws. The 3News report notes that many of the impounded bikes lacked side mirrors and proper license plates which are prerequisite requirements for legal operation on public roads. The Ghana Police Service has not yet released a full list of the names of those detained but confirmed that the clampdown on lawlessness will continue indefinitely.
