Two staff members of a STEM senior high school at Awaso in the Western North Region have been arrested by police in connection with the alleged theft of food items intended for students.
The suspects have been identified by police as Bennedicta Nyamadi, a school matron, and Rahel Kyeremateng, a cook at the school. They were arrested on Tuesday December 23 2025 and are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Western North Regional Police Command said the arrests followed intelligence received on the night of December 22 2025 by the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive. The information suggested that food items belonging to the school had been removed and stored at a private location.
Acting on the intelligence, a joint team made up of police officers, the Member of Parliament for the area, and the Municipal Chief Executive carried out a search at the residence of Rahel Kyeremateng at Sefwi Atronsu.
During the search, officers retrieved large quantities of food items suspected to have been taken from the school’s food store. Police said the items included 21 bags of rice weighing 50 kilogrammes each, four sacks of gari, two sacks of maize, one and a half bags of millet, one bag of sugar, three bags of beans, 40 large tins of tomato paste, four cartons of milk, six gallons of cooking oil, and 54 tins of canned mackerel.
According to police, preliminary investigations suggest that Nyamadi and Kyeremateng acted together to remove the food items from the school and kept them at Kyeremateng’s residence with the intention of selling them at a later date.
During interrogation, Kyeremateng allegedly identified Nyamadi as the source of the food items. This led to Nyamadi’s arrest at the school premises.
Police also disclosed that they are searching for a third suspect, Hannah Dufie, an assistant matron at the school, who is alleged to have played a role in the incident and is currently on the run.
The total value of the retrieved food items has not yet been determined. Police say investigations are continuing and that the suspects will be processed in accordance with the law once enquiries are completed.
