The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent attack on police officers at Bepotenten Sukuum near Jacobu while they were carrying out routine patrol duties.

According to a police account, the incident occurred on January 23, 2026, after a patrol team from the Jacobu District recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy. Police said the officers instructed the minor to inform the owner of the firearm to report to the police station with the appropriate documentation.

While the officers were returning from the patrol, they were reportedly confronted by a large crowd estimated at about 100 people. Police say the group blocked the road and were armed with cutlasses and firearms. The officers were allegedly assaulted during the confrontation, and a service rifle was forcibly taken from one of them.

Police said the situation escalated, leading to an exchange during which the individual who seized the rifle was shot. Another person sustained injuries. The service rifle was later retrieved by the police.

Authorities have not released the identities of the injured persons, nor have they provided details on whether any arrests have been made in connection with the attack. Police say investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all persons involved in the assault on the officers and the attempted seizure of police weapons.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against attacking police officers in the discharge of their duties, stressing that such acts constitute serious criminal offences. The command has assured that those found culpable will be arrested and made to face the law.

Police say further updates will be provided as investigations progress. All persons involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
