On May 9, 2001, the Accra Sports Stadium witnessed the deadliest stadium disaster in African history. A highly anticipated football match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko turned tragic, leading to a catastrophic loss of life.
The intense rivalry between the two clubs, coupled with escalating tensions during the game, culminated in a stampede. Hearts of Oak had scored two late goals, further heightening emotions among the spectators. The ensuing panic resulted in the deaths of over 120 people, making it a somber anniversary for Ghana.
