A Ho Circuit Court sentenced an eighteen year old man to five years in prison following his involvement in motorbike thefts within the Ho Municipality. According to a MyJoyOnline report the convict known as Mawupemor Golo was apprehended after stealing a Haojue motorcycle from a residence in Ho Fiave. The court presided over by His Honour Felix Datsomor heard that the theft occurred while the owner was visiting a friend on November 10 2024.
Police investigators revealed that Golo was caught by residents while attempting to move the stolen motorbike. A Ghana News Agency report stated that the convict failed to provide ownership documentation when questioned by bystanders which led to his arrest and subsequent handover to the Volta Regional Police Command. The prosecution informed the court that the vehicle was valued at approximately fifteen thousand Ghana Cedis at the time of the theft.
During the court proceedings Golo pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing. The presiding judge noted that the sentence serves as a deterrent due to the increasing frequency of motorcycle thefts in the Volta Region. A report from Citi Newsroom confirmed that the convict will serve his full term at the Ho Central Prison. The court did not grant an option for a fine given the gravity of the offense and the value of the recovered property.
The Volta Regional Police Service issued a statement following the sentencing to urge motorbike owners to utilize tracking devices and steering locks. Officials stated that several other reports of similar thefts are currently under investigation. While the original MyJoyOnline report suggested Golo was part of a series of thefts the court judgment specifically focused on the evidence regarding the single recovered Haojue motorcycle. Police are investigating potential accomplices who may be linked to a wider theft syndicate in the area.
