The Ashanti Regional Police Command has taken three men into custody following an alleged armed robbery on a mobile money vendor in Kumasi according to an Adom Online report. The incident occurred on Monday evening when the suspects allegedly approached the vendor at gunpoint to demand cash and electronic devices. Statements from the Ghana Police Service indicate that the operation was carried out after receiving a distress call regarding the attack.
Assisted by members of the local community investigators tracked the suspects to a hideout where they were apprehended. During the arrest officers seized a motorbike and a weapon believed to have been used during the operation as detailed by Citi Newsroom. The police have not yet released the names of the suspects pending further investigation and identification parades with the victim.
The Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer stated that the suspects are currently assisting with inquiries to uncover the full extent of their activities. According to reports from Joy Online the police are also investigating potential links between this group and a series of similar attacks on mobile money agents across the Kumasi metropolis over the past month.
Authorities have urged mobile money vendors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements around their business premises. The Ghana Police Service maintained that the three individuals will be processed for court once the preliminary investigations are concluded. No injuries were reported during the arrest of the suspects who remain in police custody.
