A Koforidua Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of two men suspected of stealing high tension electricity cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana. The suspects were apprehended following reports of missing infrastructure that disrupted power distribution in parts of the Eastern Region. According to a Ghana News Agency report the court proceedings highlighted the impact of such thefts on the national grid and local utility services.
The Electricity Company of Ghana has frequently reported significant financial losses and service interruptions caused by the vandalism of electrical installations. A report from Citi Newsroom indicates that the utility provider is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to increase surveillance on high tension lines. The suspects were reportedly caught in possession of the cables during a targeted operation by security personnel according to the initial prosecution testimony.
During the court session the presiding magistrate noted the severity of the charges because of the essential nature of power infrastructure. The prosecution requested more time to conclude investigations and identify potential accomplices in the cable theft syndicate. This request was granted and the suspects are expected to reappear in court at a later date to enter their formal pleas after legal representation is finalized for both parties.
While the Ghana News Agency confirms the identities of the suspects as local residents the court has maintained their detention to prevent any interference with ongoing evidence gathering. The Ghana Police Service has not yet issued a public statement on the specific weight or market value of the seized materials but has confirmed that the recovered items are currently held as exhibits for the upcoming trial. All suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
