The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) carried out a large demolition exercise last Friday. The operation took place around the Asafo Interchange.
Many unauthorized structures were cleared. These buildings were located near the COCOBOD building and the Takoradi Flour Mill.
Officials stated the area had become a haven for criminals. It was also heavily congested with illegal constructions.
Concerns over public safety and sanitation were major reasons for the action. The structures also blocked essential services.
The KMA has indicated that more areas will be targeted. 'Tinker Island' is mentioned as the next location for similar exercises.
This action is part of KMA's efforts to improve urban planning and public safety in Kumasi.
