The Electricity Company of Ghana Tema Region communications team announced the discovery of a significant illegal connection at a large industrial cold store located within the Tema South District. According to a MyJoyOnline report officials conducting routine meter monitoring detected that the facility had bypassed the official metering system to consume power without payment.
Daily Graphic reports indicate that the ECG Revenue Protection Task Force identified the irregularity during an inspection on Thursday June twenty seventh twenty twenty four. The enforcement team found that while the facility appeared to be using a prepaid meter the heavy industrial cooling equipment was drawing power directly from the main service lines without being recorded.
Citi Newsroom reports that a representative of the cold store was taken into custody by the police to assist with ongoing investigations into the matter. The suspect is expected to face charges related to the interference with electricity distribution equipment and the theft of power which are criminal offenses under Ghanaian law.
The Electricity Company of Ghana stated that the facility will be served with a bill representing the estimated cost of the stolen electricity plus administrative penalties. ECG officials emphasized in a GhanaWeb report that they are intensifying field inspections across industrial zones to curb revenue losses which currently affect the operational efficiency of the national power distributor.
