An Accra Circuit Court handed down a 15 year prison sentence to a domestic worker identified as Bright Nwaosah for his role in an aggravated burglary at a residence in East Legon. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the convict was charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery. The prosecution stated that the incident occurred on Friday when Nwaosah facilitated the entry of armed accomplices into the home of his employer.
The Ghana Police Service informed the court that the group succeeded in stealing an assortment of valuable jewelry and electronic gadgets from the premises. A report from 3News indicates that the jewelry was valued at thousands of Ghana Cedis. During the trial, Nwaosah admitted to the charges while his accomplices reportedly remains at large. The police officials stated that they are currently pursuing the remaining suspects who fled the scene after the robbery.
Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah delivered the sentence after considering the gravity of the breach of trust involved in the case. GhanaWeb reported that the judge emphasized the need for a deterrent sentence to discourage domestic workers from using their access to commit crimes against their employers. The court heard that the convict provided critical information about the house layout and the timing of the owners movements to his collaborators.
The victim of the robbery provided testimony regarding the distress caused by the incident. Sources from the Daily Guide Network mention that the security personnel at the gated community were alerted but the suspects had already exited the vicinity before intervention. The 15 year sentence is to be served at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. The prosecution confirmed that some of the stolen items are yet to be recovered as the investigation into the whereabouts of the other suspects continues.
