The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have initiated an intensive search operation across the Sunyani municipality and surrounding areas within the Bono Region. This operation follows a reported escape attempt that occurred while inmates were being transported between facilities. According to a Citi Newsroom report, two individuals initially attempted to flee the custody of armed guards during the transit process.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that one of the suspects was successfully recaptured shortly after the breach occurred. The individual remains in secure custody while the search for the second person continues. Graphic Online reports that security checkpoints have been established on major roads leading out of Sunyani to prevent the fugitive from exiting the region.
A spokesperson for the Ghana Prisons Service indicated that an internal investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that allowed the inmates to attempt their escape. This report was corroborated by Joy Online which noted that additional personnel from the Formed Police Unit have been deployed to assist in the tracking operation through forest areas and nearby settlements.
Authorities have urged residents of the Sunyani area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the nearest police station. The identity of the escaped convict has not been officially released to the public at this time. A Daily Guide report states that the security agencies are treating the search as a high priority matter to ensure public safety and the integrity of the judicial system.
