Tom Byabagamba, the former head of Rwanda's presidential guard, has died in jail. He was 59 years old.

Byabagamba was once a personal bodyguard to President Paul Kagame.

He was arrested in 2014. His brother-in-law, retired brigadier-general Frank Rusagara, was also arrested at the same time.

Authorities accused them of spreading rumors and tarnishing the image of the country and its government.

Human rights groups had expressed concern over their cases.

The exact cause of Byabagamba's death in jail is not immediately clear.
