The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service have initiated a joint operation to locate an inmate who escaped from custody on February 5 2024. According to a Citi Newsroom report the individual described as a high profile convict managed to flee while under guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. Security officials have not yet publicly released the specific identity of the escapee at this stage of the investigation.

A report from Graphic Online indicates that the convict was transported from the Amanfrom Camp Prison to the medical facility for specialized treatment. The escape took place during a transition between the clinical area and a waiting vehicle. Daily Guide Network reports that the guards assigned to the inmate are currently under investigation to determine if there was any negligence or complicity in the breach of security protocol.

Police officials in the Ashanti Region have stated that checkpoints are established on major routes leading out of Kumasi to prevent the suspect from leaving the jurisdiction. The Ghana Police Service issued a statement requesting members of the public to provide any credible information that might lead to the apprehension of the individual. Authorities have cautioned that harboring a fugitive is a criminal offense punishable under Ghanaian law.

The management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has clarified that the security of inmates remains the primary responsibility of the escorting officers rather than hospital staff. This clarification follows an earlier unconfirmed report from OTEC FM suggesting that hospital surveillance footage is being analyzed to track the movement of the convict through the facility exits. No arrests of accomplices have been confirmed by official sources at this time.
