The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate has arrested a key suspect in connection with the Wapuli kidnapping case, marking what police describe as a major breakthrough in efforts to dismantle the syndicate behind the crime.

According to an official police press release dated January 21, 2026, the arrest followed weeks of sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance after the kidnapping of a 42-year-old man at Wapuli in December 2025.

Police said the victim was abducted on December 6, 2025, and subjected to life-threatening cutlass wounds while in captivity. Investigators stated that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of GH¢100,000 for his release. Police say GH¢90,000 was paid before the victim was freed, with officers later managing to retrieve GH¢70,000 of the ransom amount.

Following the victim’s rescue, three suspects were arrested and charged in connection with the crime. Police say intelligence indicated the existence of a fourth accomplice, prompting a continued manhunt.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., police arrested the remaining suspect, identified as Hoyefee Amadu, at a hideout in a village approximately 10 kilometres from the outskirts of Watugu, near Gushegu. Police say he is believed to be the fourth and final member of the kidnapping group.

The three previously arrested suspects have been remanded into prison custody and are awaiting their next court appearance. Police have not disclosed the specific charges filed but confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing.

Authorities say the latest arrest effectively dismantles the syndicate responsible for the Wapuli kidnapping. Police reiterated their commitment to pursuing violent crime networks and urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing credible information.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
