A violent confrontation among members of the same family over a land dispute has resulted in the deaths of two people in Wa in the Upper West Region. The incident occurred in the early hours of the day and has been confirmed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Francis Yiribaare.
According to the police commander, the Ghana Police Service received intelligence through its situational reports indicating that a violent clash had broken out in the area. A rapid response team was immediately dispatched to the scene. By the time officers arrived, the situation had escalated beyond control.
Police found one individual dead at the scene, while another victim who was still conscious was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment. DCOP Yiribaare said the second victim later died from injuries sustained during the clash, increasing the death toll to two.
Preliminary police assessments indicate that the violence stemmed from long standing disagreements within the family over the ownership and control of a parcel of land. The police commander described such disputes as a recurring challenge in many communities across the region and expressed concern over the deadly consequences in this case.
DCOP Yiribaare disclosed that two suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the incident. One of the suspects is said to be linked to security arrangements in the area, while the second was arrested during early morning police operations. Both suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
The Regional Police Commander assured the public that the police are thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the clash. He said all individuals found to be responsible would be dealt with according to the law, stressing that accountability is necessary to ensure justice and deter future violence linked to land disputes.
He noted that residents of the area have largely been cooperative since investigations began and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation. DCOP Yiribaare advised community members to rely on official police communication given the sensitive nature of the case.
He further encouraged families and individuals involved in land and inheritance disputes to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolution. He urged the use of traditional authorities, local mediators and the police rather than resorting to violence, which he said often leads to irreversible loss of life and property.
Investigations are ongoing, and police say further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
