Officers from the Ghana Police Service intercepted a private vehicle in the Tema region on Wednesday which led to the arrest of two male suspects found in possession of unauthorized firearms. A report from Citi Newsroom indicates that the discovery occurred during a routine stop and search operation aimed at enhancing public safety within the metropolitan area.

During the inspection of the vehicle the police team uncovered military grade assault rifles and a quantity of live ammunition that the suspects failed to provide legal documentation for at the scene. The Ghana Police Service has not yet released the specific identities of the two men but confirmed that they remain in custody for interrogation regarding the source of the high caliber weaponry.

According to a report from GhanaWeb the operation forms part of a broader strategy by the Tema Regional Police Command to curb the proliferation of illegal arms in the industrial hub. Initial investigations suggest the weapons were being transported through the city although the final destination of the suspects has not been publicly confirmed by official investigators.

The suspects are expected to face charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in a court of competent jurisdiction once preliminary inquiries are completed. A statement from the regional police command cited by local media outlets emphasizes that the security agencies remain on high alert to prevent violent crimes and ensure the peace of the region is maintained.
