The Ghana Police Service conducted a strategic operation in the Atewa Forest Reserve to dismantle an alleged illegal mining syndicate. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the intervention followed weeks of undercover surveillance focused on protecting the ecologically sensitive Eastern Region. Security officials confirmed that four men were taken into custody during the raid for their suspected involvement in unauthorized gold mining activities.

A statement from the Ghana Police Service indicated that several items related to illegal mining were confiscated at the scene. These items include water pumping machines and various excavation tools used for environmental destruction. MyJoyOnline reported that the suspects were caught in the act of clearing vegetation and diverting water bodies to facilitate their mining activities within the forest boundaries.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources reiterated its commitment to flushing out illegal miners who defy the ban on mining in forest reserves. A Graphic Online report mentioned that the four suspects have been moved to a regional facility for further interrogation and processing. Officials have yet to release the names of the individuals pending their initial appearance before a court of competent jurisdiction.

Local environmental advocacy groups have praised the intervention while calling for stricter monitoring of the Atewa Range. A GhanaWeb report noted that the suspects face multiple charges including conspiracy to commit a crime and undertaking a small-scale mining operation without a valid license. The police stated that additional suspects linked to the syndicate are currently being pursued as the investigation expands into the supply chain of the operation.
