Personnel from the Ghana Police Service have apprehended a 28 year old man in Sekondi for allegedly carrying an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was detained during a standard motor traffic check on a local thoroughfare. According to an Adom Online report the individual was traveling in a vehicle when officers flagged him for inspection.
During the search of the vehicle and its occupants the police discovered a pistol for which the suspect could not provide a valid permit. A GhanaWeb report indicates that the item was seized immediately and taken into evidence. The suspect was subsequently moved to the regional police headquarters for further questioning and processing.
The Western Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest and stated that the investigation aims to determine the origin of the weapon and the intentions of the suspect. Officials have not yet released the name of the individual pending formal charges in court. This information aligns with a Citi Newsroom report regarding increased police presence and searches in the Shama and Sekondi Takoradi metropolitan areas.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigators verify his background and check the serial number of the seized pistol against the national ballistics database. Under the Criminal Offences Act of Ghana the possession of a firearm without a lawful license is a serious offense. The police have urged the public to cooperate with traffic stops as part of broader efforts to reduce violent crime in the region.
