Personnel from the Ashanti Regional Police Command recovered a hijacked Toyota Land Cruiser and two locally manufactured pistols during a routine patrol operation in Kumasi. According to a Ghana Police Service statement the incident occurred when officers spotted a vehicle being driven in a suspicious manner. The Citi Newsroom report indicates that the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the patrol team when the officers attempted to intercept them for a search.
The police team returned fire which led to a brief shootout between the officers and the suspected criminals. According to official reports the suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby bush to evade arrest. No injuries to the police officers were reported during the exchange of gunfire but the physical condition of the suspects is currently unknown because they escaped the scene.
Upon inspecting the abandoned SUV the police discovered firearms hidden within the cabin. A Joy Online report confirms that two locally manufactured pistols and several rounds of ammunition were seized as evidence. The vehicle has since been towed to the Regional Police Headquarters for forensic examination and to facilitate the process of identifying the lawful owner.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified its search for the fleeing suspects through targeted intelligence operations. A Daily Graphic report states that local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any individuals with suspicious gunshot wounds to the nearest medical facility or police station. Law enforcement officials have characterized the recovery as part of an ongoing strategy to reduce violent crime and carjackings within the Kumasi metropolis.
