The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has explained the reason for removing the police Special Operations Taskforce from Tamale. This unit is often called the “Black Maria.”
The decision led to protests by some young people in Tamale. They asked for the taskforce to return.
These youth said the taskforce was important in fighting illegal drugs in the city. They believed its presence helped reduce crime.
The Inspector-General did not give specific details about the drug fighting efforts in his statement.
He stated the withdrawal was a planned operational decision. He did not say when or if the taskforce would return to Tamale.
The police have reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region. Further security measures will be put in place.
