A coordinated task force comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces successfully conducted a targeted operation aimed at curbing unauthorized mining activities in the Western Region. The intervention took place along the banks of the Pra River where the suspects were allegedly caught engaging in environmental degradation through alluvial mining processes.
During the exercise fifteen foreign nationals were taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations into their legal status and their involvement in the suspected activities. Authorities reported that the operation was part of a broader national strategy to protect water bodies from the harmful effects of unregulated mining practices which have caused significant siltation in the river.
Security personnel on the scene successfully seized several pieces of heavy equipment including excavators and industrial pumping machines found at the site. These items were transported to a secure location where they will serve as evidence in the anticipated legal proceedings against the individuals involved in the alleged breach of environmental laws.
The suspects currently remain in police custody while investigators work with the Ghana Immigration Service to verify their documentation and residency permits. Officials have stated that they intend to process the individuals for court once preliminary inquiries are completed to ensure that legal due process is strictly followed.
The leadership of the joint task force emphasized that these operations will continue across various regions to deter further encroachment on protected lands. They noted that the protection of the Pra River remains a high priority for the government given its critical role in providing drinking water to local communities and supporting agricultural stability in the area.
