Security personnel stationed at the Tarkwa checkpoint in the Western Region intercepted a vehicle transporting illegal gold ores on October 25 2023. A report from GhanaWeb indicates that the suspect is a thirty four year old male who was unable to provide required documentation for the precious minerals. The gold nuggets are estimated to be worth millions of Ghana Cedis according to preliminary assessments cited by local authorities.

The Ghana Police Service at the Tarkwa Division confirmed the arrest and stated that the vehicle was stopped during a routine search operation. Officers discovered the concealed gold hidden within the transport vehicle which led to the immediate detention of the driver. Official statements from the security taskforce suggest the minerals were being moved without the necessary permits from the Minerals Commission of Ghana.

According to reports from the Daily Graphic and Citi Newsroom the suspect is currently assisting with investigations to identify the source of the gold and the intended recipients. Investigators are working to determine if the seized items are linked to undocumented small scale mining activities known as galamsey which are prevalent in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

The suspect has not yet been formally charged in court as the police continue to verify the weight and purity of the seized nuggets. A GhanaWeb report mentions that the intercepted gold will be handed over to the Precious Minerals Marketing Company for forensic analysis and valuation. Security at the Tarkwa checkpoint has been heightened following this incident to prevent further smuggling of natural resources.
