A Tarkwa Circuit Court presided over by Judge Hathia Ama Manoah remanded three suspects into police custody following their arrest in connection with a gold smuggling syndicate. The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated operation aimed at curbing illegal mineral exports within the Western Region. MyJoyOnline reports that the individuals were intercepted while attempting to transport gold bullion without the requisite legal permits from the Minerals Commission.
Police investigators told the court that the seized gold is valued at several million Ghana Cedis. According to a GhanaWeb report on the incident the prosecution requested more time to conclude investigations into the broader network of the syndicate. The court granted the request for remand to ensure the suspects do not interfere with ongoing inquiries conducted by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company and the Ghana Police Service.
The identities of the suspects have been recorded by the court registry though investigators have not yet released all names to the public pending the arrest of other accomplices. A Citi Newsroom report indicates that the arrests are part of a wider crackdown on the black market gold trade which has seen increased surveillance in mining hubs like Tarkwa and Prestea. The suspects were not asked to enter a plea during their initial appearance.
The defense counsel for the suspects argued for bail stating that the accused persons have fixed places of abode and were willing to cooperate with the authorities. However the prosecution opposed the application by citing the gravity of the economic crime and the risk of the suspects fleeing the jurisdiction. The presiding judge adjourned the case to allow the police to finalize their forensic examination of the seized minerals and verify the authenticity of documentation found with the suspects.
