The Ghana Police Service recovered five luxury vehicles reported stolen from North America during an operation at the Tema Port. According to a MyJoyOnline report the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. The vehicles were discovered inside shipping containers that arrived at the port from Canada and the United States.
Authorities identified the recovered cars as high end models including Lexus and Honda brands. A GhanaWeb report states that the vehicles were flagged by international law enforcement agencies before their arrival in Ghana. Security personnel intercepted the containers based on intelligence regarding the illicit shipment of stolen property across international borders.
Three individuals were detained during the operation and are currently being questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department. A Citi Newsroom report indicates that these suspects are believed to be linked to the clearing process at the port. The police have not yet released the names of the suspects as they are currently assisting with inquiries regarding the documentation used for the shipment.
The Ghana Police Service statement confirms that investigations are ongoing to identify the local recipients of the vehicles. Authorities intend to coordinate with the International Criminal Police Organization to trace the original owners in North America. The five recovered vehicles remain in the custody of the Customs Division at the Tema Port pending further legal proceedings and court orders for their disposal.
