A specialized unit of the Ghana Police Service conducted a targeted operation on January 23 to dismantle an illegal weapons manufacturing site in Koforidua. According to a report from MyJoyOnline, the tactical team acted on intelligence regarding a secret workshop involved in the production and distribution of unregistered firearms.
During the raid officers seized several dozen firearms and various quantities of ammunition. A Citi Newsroom report stated that these weapons were allegedly prepared for sale to criminal gangs operating within the Eastern Region and surrounding areas. The police have not yet released the specific names of suspects apprehended during the exercise but officials confirmed that the site was being used for clandestine activities.
The Ghana Police Service indicated that the operation is part of a broader strategy to curb the proliferation of small arms in the country. A report from GhanaWeb noted that the seized items included locally manufactured pistols and shotguns alongside specialized tools used for gunsmithing. Investigators are currently tracing the origins of the materials used in the workshop.
Legal proceedings are expected to follow as the police prepare charges related to the illegal possession and manufacturing of firearms. Official statements from the Eastern Regional Police Command suggest that surveillance on similar suspicious locations will increase. The authorities urged the public to report any unusual activities in residential areas to prevent the growth of shadow workshops.
