The Ghana Police Service conducted an intelligence led operation resulting in the arrest of six individuals suspected of orchestrating highway robberies. According to a Citi Newsroom report the suspects are allegedly linked to a series of carjackings and violent thefts occurring over the past week. The incidents primarily targeted motorists traveling along the Kumasi Accra highway specifically within the Konongo jurisdiction.
Official statements from the Ashanti Regional Police Command indicate that the tactical team tracked the suspects to their hideouts following a surge in reports from commuters. Daily Graphic reports suggest that the gang utilized roadblocks and weapons to intercept vehicles during late night hours. Police recovered various items during the raid which authorities are currently processing as evidence for prosecution.
While the identities of the suspects remain withheld pending further interrogation the Ghana Police Service stated that the group is believed to be part of a larger syndicate. A report by MyJoyOnline mentions that security presence has been intensified along the stretch to prevent further attacks. The police have urged victims of recent robberies on the Konongo road to visit the regional headquarters to assist with the identification process.
The suspects currently remain in police custody facing preliminary charges related to conspiracy and robbery. A GhanaWeb report indicates that investigators are examining forensic evidence to determine if the group is connected to unsolved cases in neighboring districts. All six individuals are expected to be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction once formal charges are finalized by the Attorney General Department.
