The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect at Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region for allegedly possessing suspected counterfeit foreign currency and a firearm without lawful authority.

According to a police statement, the arrest was carried out by the National Operations Directorate Surveillance Unit after intelligence suggested that a self-styled fetish priest in the area was involved in criminal activities and was in possession of a firearm, raising security concerns among residents.

Police identified the suspect as Josiah Elorm Kwame Amezado. Officers say a search conducted in his room led to the recovery of quantities of one-hundred-dollar United States notes suspected to be counterfeit. Other items retrieved included a pair of handcuffs, a black vest, a Kuzey A100 blank pistol, and fifty-eight rounds of 9mm blank ammunition.

Authorities say the suspect was immediately taken into custody. The recovered items have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue. Police say further checks will be carried out to determine the authenticity and origin of the foreign currency, as well as the circumstances under which the firearm and ammunition were acquired and kept.

The police have not disclosed whether the suspect has been formally charged. Officials say the case remains under investigation and that appropriate legal steps will be taken based on the outcome of forensic and intelligence findings.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to acting on intelligence to prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency and the unlawful possession of firearms, noting that such activities pose risks to public safety.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
