Members of the National Security anti-galamsey taskforce conducted a coordinated enforcement operation in the Eastern Region to disrupt suspected illegal mining activities. According to a Citi Newsroom report, the team focused their efforts on sites situated near the Birim River where environmental degradation was observed. The operation targeted an organized syndicate allegedly engaging in mining without valid environmental permits or mineral licenses.

During the exercise operatives apprehended five foreign nationals who are suspected of leading the local mining activities. The nationalities of the suspects have not been officially confirmed by the Ghana Police Service according to a Joy Online report. Authorities processed the individuals for further interrogation and potential prosecution at the regional level. The suspects are currently undergoing screening to determine their immigration status and legal right to occupy the mining sites.

The taskforce successfully seized several pieces of heavy equipment including excavators and industrial pumping machines found at the scene. A Daily Graphic report indicates that these items were transported to a designated storage facility under the supervision of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. Operatives also dismantled temporary housing structures used by the alleged miners to maintain their presence near the water body.

Local environmental monitors noted that the area around the Birim River has suffered significant siltation due to recent mining efforts. While the Citi Newsroom report claims the syndicate was highly organized officials from the Minerals Commission have yet to issue a statement regarding the specific mining lease status of the land. The suspects remain in custody while investigations continue into their sponsors and local collaborators.
