A forty five year old man is in the custody of the Ghana Police Service following his arrest in Tema for an alleged attempt to traffic three minors. The suspect was intercepted while reportedly preparing to transport the children across the national border without the consent of their parents or legal guardians according to a report by MyJoyOnline.
The operation was conducted after local authorities received intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of the children within the Tema metropolis. A report from Citi Newsroom indicates that the suspect intended to take the victims to a neighboring country for undisclosed purposes. The identities of the three minors remain protected under Ghanaian law to ensure their safety and privacy durante the ongoing investigation.
Police officials in the Tema Region stated that the children were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving care from social welfare officers. According to a GhanaWeb report security agencies are working to verify the ages and nationalities of the victims while seeking to establish contact with their biological families. The suspect is expected to face charges related to human trafficking and child abduction under the Human Trafficking Act of Ghana.
Investigators are currently exploring whether the suspect is part of a larger organized crime network involved in cross border trafficking. A statement from the Ghana Police Service through their regional public relations directorate noted that additional surveillance has been deployed at major transit points to prevent similar incidents. No court date has been finalized as the prosecution continues to gather evidence for a formal filing at the Tema High Court.
