Customs officers working for the Ghana Revenue Authority have seized 560 diesel engines at the Tema Port. These engines were found at the Golden Jubilee Terminal.
The officers believe the engines were intended for use in illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey. This kind of mining is against the law in Ghana.
The seizure occurred during a routine inspection of cargo. Customs officers noticed something suspicious about the shipment.
They flagged the containers for a closer look. This led to the discovery of the large number of engines.
Authorities are investigating the origin and destination of the engines. They want to understand who was behind the shipment and their plans.
This action by GRA Customs is part of efforts to stop illegal activities at ports and prevent resources from being used for unlawful purposes.
The Ghana Revenue Authority plays a key role in controlling what enters and leaves the country.
Preventing the supply of equipment for illegal mining helps protect the environment.
