The Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission has arrested 23 illegal miners. The arrests happened on Friday, March 5, 2026. The operation took place along the Oda River in the Ashanti region.
The Bekwai Forest District's Rapid Response Unit led the operation. They found the individuals mining without permission. This activity often causes significant environmental damage.
During the raid, officers seized 82 Changfan machines. They also took away 77 pumping machines and 21 motorbikes. These items are commonly used in illegal mining operations.
Authorities also destroyed 20 structures found at the mining site. These structures were likely used to support the illegal mining activities.
Among those arrested are four women. All 23 suspects are facing charges related to illegal mining and environmental pollution. The Oda River is a vital water source in the region.
An official statement from the Forestry Commission detailed the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining. The commission emphasized its commitment to protecting Ghana's natural resources.
The suspects are currently in police custody. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their operations and any accomplices.
This operation is part of a wider government effort to curb illegal mining, known as galamsey. These activities have led to widespread pollution of water bodies and land degradation.
