The Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission, working with the Bekwai Forest District, arrested 23 people for illegal mining. The arrests took place on Friday, March 5, 2026, along the Oda River in the Ashanti region.
The operation uncovered significant illegal mining activity. Authorities seized 82 Changfan machines and 77 pumping machines. Additionally, 21 motorbikes were confiscated by the team.
The unit also destroyed 20 structures that were being used for the illegal mining operations. This action aims to disrupt the methods used by the miners.
Among those arrested were four women. They are all suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities that harm the environment.
The operation focused on stopping the pollution of the Oda River. Illegal mining is known to cause severe environmental damage, including water contamination.
