The Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission, working with the Bekwai Forest District, arrested 23 illegal miners on Friday, March 5, 2026. These individuals were found mining along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region.
During the operation, the team confiscated 82 Changfan machines, 77 pumping machines, and 21 motorbikes. They also destroyed 20 structures used for illegal mining activities.
The arrested suspects include four women. Authorities stated that the miners were polluting the Oda River with their activities.
The Forestry Commission stated the operation was part of efforts to combat illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey, which damages the environment.
