The Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission, working with the Bekwai Forest District, made a significant arrest on Friday, March 5, 2026. They apprehended 23 individuals involved in illegal mining.
These activities were taking place along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region. The miners were reportedly polluting the river and damaging the environment.
During the operation, the team seized a large amount of mining equipment. This included 82 Changfan machines and 77 pumping machines essential for their illegal operations.
Authorities also confiscated 21 motorbikes used by the miners. In addition, 20 structures believed to be used for the illegal mining were destroyed.
The group of arrested individuals included four women. All 23 suspects are now in custody facing charges related to illegal mining.
This action is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, often referred to as galamsey. Such activities cause significant environmental damage, particularly to water bodies.
The Oda River is a vital water source for many communities in the region. Its pollution poses a threat to public health and the ecosystem.
The Forestry Commission stated that operations to stop and prevent illegal mining will continue. They urge the public to report any such activities to the authorities.
