A team from the Forestry Commission has arrested 23 people for illegal mining. The operation took place along the Oda River in the Ashanti region last Friday, March 5, 2026. This action was carried out by the Rapid Response Unit and the Bekwai Forest District.
The arrested individuals were engaging in illegal mining activities. These activities were polluting the Oda River. The Forestry Commission stated the illegal mining harms the environment.
During the operation, officers seized 82 Changfan machines. They also confiscated 77 pumping machines and 21 motorbikes. These items were being used for the illegal mining.
In addition to seizing equipment, authorities destroyed 20 structures. These structures were likely built to support the illegal mining operations. The destruction aims to deter further illegal activities.
The suspects include four women among the 23 arrested individuals. They will face legal proceedings for their actions. The Ghana Police Service is handling the investigation.
This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey. The government has been working to stop these activities due to their environmental impact.
