Security officials at the Elubo border in the Western Region have detained three suspects in connection with an attempt to smuggle 500 bags of cocoa beans across the border. According to report by MyJoyOnline, the joint security task force intercepted a specialized truck during a routine inspection at the border post.

The Ghana Cocoa Board and the Ghana Police Service have been working in coordination to curb the rising cases of illegal cocoa exportation. Citi Newsroom reports that the intercepted beans were destined for Ivory Coast where prices for the commodity are currently higher than the local market rates set in Ghana.

Authorities have identified the suspects as the driver of the vehicle and two assistants who are currently in police custody for further interrogation. A Daily Guide report indicates that the vehicle involved has been impounded at the Elubo police station while the bags of cocoa are being held as evidence for the upcoming prosecution.

The Ghana Police Service has not yet released the full names of the individuals involved. Officials told GhanaWeb that the suspects will face charges related to the illegal exportation of cocoa and economic sabotage against the state. The anti-smuggling task force has intensified surveillance along the Western border to prevent further revenue losses to the state.
