Security officials at the Tema Port Golden Jubilee Terminal intercepted a sizable cache of firearms and ammunition on Friday according to a Ghana Revenue Authority statement and a GhanaWeb report. The weapons were discovered during a physical examination of a container that arrived from the United States of America. Officers found the contraband hidden among personal effects and vehicle parts within the shipment.
The seizure included various types of firearms and several thousand rounds of live ammunition as reported by Citi Newsroom. Personnel from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority coordinated with the National Intelligence Bureau and the Ghana Police Service to secure the items. No immediate arrests were reported at the scene but the Ghana Police Service indicated that the clearing agent is assisting with inquiries.
Authorities have not yet released the exact number of weapons seized while awaiting a full inventory and forensic verification. A Graphic Online report stated that the container was flagged for suspicious activity through the port risk management system. The Ghana Revenue Authority confirmed that the items were not declared on the customs manifest which constitutes a serious violation of the Arms and Ammunition Act.
The Ministry of National Security and the Ghana Police Service are working together to trace the intended recipients of the shipment according to various media reports. State officials have urged the public to remain calm while security agencies strengthen surveillance at the national borders and ports of entry. The intercepted weapons are being held at a secure location to prevent them from entering the illegal market.
