The Ghana Police Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority intercepted a significant shipment of unlicensed firearms at the Aflao border on the frontier with Togo. According to reports from Modern Ghana and GhanaWeb, the joint operation led to the discovery of multiple handguns and a large quantity of ammunition concealed within a commercial truck.

The Ghana Police Service stated that intelligence gathered by their units enabled the swift identification of the suspicious vehicle as it attempted to cross the border. Officials confirmed that the weapons were packed in secret compartments to evade standard security screenings. The exact count of weapons and the caliber of ammunition are being processed for evidence according to a Daily Graphic report.

One male suspect who was driving the vehicle at the time of the interception is currently held in police custody. Authorities have not yet released his identity while they conduct forensic examinations on the seized items. The Ghana Police Service indicated that the suspect is assisting with inquiries to determine whether the weapons were intended for criminal syndicates within the country.

Security analysts quoted by Citi Newsroom suggest that the seizure highlights the ongoing challenges of arms smuggling across West African borders. The Ministry of National Security has previously warned about the influx of illegal small arms. The police have clarified that the investigation remains active and they are working with international partners to trace the manufacturer of the intercepted firearms.
