A total of 258 people have been arrested for illegal mining activities in Ghana's forest reserves. The arrests were made by July 2026.
Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced the figures. He noted that these arrests are part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining.
However, the Minister pointed out a major challenge. He stated that successfully prosecuting the arrested individuals is proving difficult.
This prosecution challenge is currently the biggest obstacle in the fight against galamsey. The Minister did not specify the reasons for the prosecution difficulties.
The government continues its operations to protect forest reserves from illegal mining operations.
