Twenty-three people have been arrested for illegal mining activities. The arrests took place along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region.
The operation was carried out by the Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission. They apprehended suspects at Aburokyere and Bepotenten.
Eighty-two changfan machines were seized. These machines are often used for illegal alluvial mining.
Four women were among those arrested. They are suspected of engaging in illegal mining contaminating the Oda River.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
Authorities stated that the illegal mining operations have been polluting the river.
Further investigations are underway by the forestry commission.
Legal action is expected to follow for those arrested.
