Police have arrested 23 people for illegal mining. The arrests happened along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region. This area is known for pollution from galamsey operations.
The operation was carried out by the Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission. They found the suspects working illegally near Bepotenten and Aburokyere.
Among those arrested are four women. Authorities seized 82 changfan machines used in the illegal mining process. These machines are often used to extract gold from riverbeds.
The Oda River has suffered significant pollution due to these activities. Illegal mining operations often release harmful chemicals and sediment into waterways.
The suspects will face legal action. Officials stated that the fight against illegal mining is ongoing to protect natural resources.
This raid is part of a larger effort to stop the destruction of land and water bodies. Protecting Ghana's environment is a key priority for the government.
