Police in the Central East Region have intensified efforts to locate a cattle herdsman believed to have sold a pump-action gun used in a shooting at a polling centre in Kasoa during the 2024 general elections.

The Ghana Police Service said the manhunt was launched after the arrest of 35-year-old Mujaheed Suraj, who was apprehended on January 17, 2026, in connection with the shooting at the Odupongkpehe Zongo voting centre on December 7, 2024. Suraj was arrested following an intelligence-led operation linked to the incident, which saw two people shot and injured during voting.

During interrogation, police said Suraj admitted to firing a pump-action firearm at the centre, injuring Bukari Inusah (34) and Tanimu Adamu Tanko (44). He also acknowledged ownership of the weapon, which he could not legally document. According to police, Suraj told investigators that he purchased the gun in 2024 from a cattle herdsman based in Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region for GH¢4,000.

The attack left both victims wounded and caused damage to a parked pickup truck with registration number GT 9550-P. The victims were initially treated at the Kasoa Polyclinic before being transferred to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for further care. Police have said the wounded have not yet fully recovered from their injuries.

Police have not released the identity of the herdsman but have described him as a key figure in tracing how an unlicensed firearm was obtained and circulated. The ongoing manhunt reflects wider concerns by security agencies about illegal arms distribution in parts of the Central Region.

Authorities also reiterated that all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction. As of this report, the herdsman has not been apprehended, and police are appealing to the public for credible information that could assist in locating him.
